Matt's Place

2339 Placer St., Butte, MT - (406) 782-8049
Opened in 1930, Matt’s Place is Montana’s oldest drive-in restaurant, featuring beautiful old murals of the mountains on the wall, a short curved counter and an ancient, bright red, waist high Coke machine. To eat, there is the Montana classic, a pork chop sandwich, and all sorts of hamburgers, including a Wimpy special (two patties on one bun), a hamburger with an egg on top, and a nutburger with ground peanuts mixed with mayonnaise and piled onto the meat.

Matt's makes its milk shakes with extra-rich ice cream. A tall silver beaker full is a whole lot of creamy satisfaction. (buffetbuster photo)

Many people who travel far to get to Matt's go for the nutburger, topped with chopped peanuts and mayo. For me, it is not an idea whose time has come. I'll take a cheeseburger, please; deluxe, of course. (buffetbuster photo)

Buffetbuster, who took this photo, said the waitress reassured him that a half order of French fries, pictured here, was more than enough. He agreed, as do I, especially if you are having a milk shake with your burger.

Matt's opened for business over seventy-five years ago; and today it remains a reminder of burger shops long ago. (buffetbuster photo)

Like the rest of Matt's, this old Coke machine speaks of another era. (buffetbuster photo)
