Dip's Country Kitchen

408 W. Rosemary St., Chapel Hill, NC - (919) 942-5837
Three meals a day are served, and while lunch and dinner offer great southern classics – fried chicken, chitlins, Brunswick stew – we love to start the day with eggs, pork chops, and gravy, sided by biscuits and grits. Other hearty wake-up meals include salmon cakes, brawny country ham, and blueberry pancakes.

""Mama Dip" is Mildred Council, founder/owner/chef at Chapel Hill's beloved soul-food restaurant. Ms. Council, nicknamed "Dip" by her siblings because she was such a tall kid, wrote Mama Dip's Kitchen in 1999; and it is a valuable cookbook that includes many of the ..."   [Read More]

"Located deep in the heart of Chapel Hill, NC, Dips Country Kitchen is a typical southern soul-food restaurant, with much to offer. Once you get within a block or two of Dip's, the smell of freshly-baked biscuits and fried chicken permeate the air, guiding you towards ..."   [Read More]

Simple and perfect, this basic yellow cake with chocolate frosting was every bit as good as Mama Dip's renowned pies.

No soul food menu would be complete without sweet yams.

Of course, sweet tea is available to drink. But this refreshing mango peach lemonade is not to be ignored.

The menu's list of more than a dozen vegetables uses asterisks to indicate which ones are cooked with pork. These collards have an asterisk and also deserve an exclamation point. They are seriously porky and delicious!

Mama Dip's menu is large, so the sampler platter is a good strategy for tasting maximum number of appetizers. This plate holds hushpuppies, fried zucchini, fried broccoli and cheese, bread and butter pickles, and fried green tomatoes. The hushpuppies are especially excellent, with a sharp buttermilky tang.

This is a Southerner's idea of a vegetable plate: mashed potatoes with gravy, butter beans, black-eyed peas and squash casserole.

The catfish, lightly coated with cornmeal, is some of the best I have ever tasted. The shrimp and oysters were also well cooked.

Perfectly-fried white meat chicken, a breast and wing. A mound of the chopped barbecue sits behind the chicken, rounded out perfectly with a generous helping of mashed potatoes with gravy.
