Helen's Sausage House

4866 North Du Pont Highway, Smyrna, DE - (302) 653-4200
Helen’s offers all manner of breakfast sandwich on bread or rolls, made with eggs, bacon, scrapple, and fried ham; as well as lunch-time sandwiches of steak, cheese steak, burgers, hot beef and hot ham. Other than sausage, the one must-eat (and must see!) meal is Helen’s pork chop sandwich. When the menu says jumbo pork chop, you better believe it. This slab of meat is approximately three times larger than the puny pieces of white bread that are stuck on either side of it.

It is assumed you want a double when you order a sausage sandwich, although singles are available. Two in a bun with peppers and onions is a well-nigh perfect sandwich: meaty, spicy, and super-succulent.

Our favorite part of the sausage sandwich is those crusty ends, which is chewy and incredibly flavorful.

The bread in this sandwich is merely an aid for picking up the extra-large pork chop, thus eliminating the need for utensils and making this excellent seat-of-the-car-(or-of-the-truck)-cuisine.

If you dine in, a knife and fork are provided with a pork chop sandwich, but they are not absolutely necessary. Using the bread as a mitt, the pork chop can easily be eaten out of hand, This one was dressed only with hot sauce.

Though not huge, the sausage sandwich packs a wallop. The flavor explodes in the mouth on first bite!

Wanting to try something different, we ordered the fried bologna with egg. The bologna is sliced thin, which allows it to get extra crispy. Good sandwich, but not on the level of the sausage.

Orders are placed at the counter and assembled quickly, either wrapped to go or on a paper plate for dining up a couple of steps in the Elvis room.

If you love excellent sausage and Elvis, you will enjoy dining in Helen's small eating area.

The most striking piece of Elvisiana decorating the dining room is an 8/10th size statuette of the King in the corner. We suspect Elvis would very much have liked Helen's food.

While common south of the Mason-Dixon line, images of happy pigs are rare on restaurant signs anywhere else.

Although sausages are the star attraction, Helen's other sandwiches are not to be ignored, in particular the pork chop and the cheese steak.
