380 East Columbia Avenue, Batesburg-Leesville, SC - (803) 532-8135
Shealy’s is the premier bar-b-que house in central South Carolina. Buffet style is their modus operandi. Feast on just about every Southern specialty you can shake a stick at. There are two types of BBQ. As outstanding as the food is, Shealy’s is the place for local color and hospitality.

"Shealy's partitioned crockery plates are pretty big, but still, there is no way to take some of everything that looks good on one pass through the buffet. Of course, you want the renowned barbecue – hacked-up pork in either a vinegar or mustard emulsion (with more ..."   [Read More]

Trip #1 through the buffet features collard greens, chicken 'n' dumplings, mustard-sauced BBQ, fried chicken, gizzards, a biscuit, and barely visible in the background, mac 'n' cheese and creamed corn. Those twigs on top are crisp-fried fatback.

Four-star mac 'n' cheese is dense and rich, the edges crusty, the center plush.

It’s difficult to choose between Shealy’s mustard-based and vinegar-based BBQs. Beans, grits, and sweet potatoes round out the plate.

Nancy’s plate focuses on the green beans, though she couldn’t resist some fried fish, turkey and dressing, limas, and a hush puppy.

A regional favorite, pulley bones of fried chicken are tender, juicy, and wonderfully all-you-can-eat.

French fries? Nope, those are crispy strips of fatback and Shealy’s mustard-based BBQ hash.

Sweet and smoky peach cobbler reflects the fact that South Carolina grows more peaches than any other state.

Rice pudding is a layered affair, rice and raisins on the bottom, a thick ribbon of egg custard on top.

Near the dessert bar is a small buffet for prepared salads, including a pickley coleslaw and a mashed potato salad.

When you enter Shealy's, you pay for your meal and are given this green card, which you must present on the way out. I asked the cashier what would happen if I tried to leave without a green card. She joked that I'd have to stay at Shealy's forever. A fine fate!

While several bowls of peach cobbler are already portioned out ready to take from the dessert buffet, you also can spoon out your own, thus creating the crust-to-fruit ratio you like best.

Long communal tables encourage conversation with strangers. I wound up sitting across from the gent in the cap at the left of the photo, who said that while he loved Shealy's BBQ, he misses the Lexington (NC) style on which he grew up.
