Long Lake Sporting Club

48 Sinclair Road, Sinclair, ME - (207) 543-7584
The entrée for which the restaurant is best known is chicken that gets pressure fried to develop an extraordinarily toasty crust that shores in massive amounts of juice. All meals come with ployes that arrive by the stack: ultrathin versions of the buckwheat crepes that are traditional farmhouse food in the region. They arrive with butter and a pitcher of syrup.

Crunchy and juicy are mere stepping stones in describing the fried chicken, and the tangy homemade BBQ sauce on the side sets it apart from any chicken in New England.

Aroostook County is potato country, and these huge, crunchy planks accentuate the true creaminess of Maine potatoes.

Boats reign during the summer, but when Long Lake freezes in winter, only the ghostly trails of snowmobile headlights can be seen across the ice at night.

Can you feel the crunch of the crust on this pressure-fried chicken? The cup at the left holds spicy dipping sauce that's good but, IMO, detracts from pure chicken succulence.

During a recent ploye-eating expedition around the northern reaches of Aroostook County, I liked Long Lake's best. They are elegant with a farmy buckwheat flavor: ideal mopping tools for chicken juice on the plate and especially wonderful when buttered and dipped in a pool of syrup.

There is plenty of parking in the broad lot outside of the Long Lake Sporting Club, making it a handy stop if you are hauling a boat or horse trailer.
