Bocce Club

226 St. Louis Ave., Woonsocket, RI - (401) 767-2000
Seventy-some years ago, Italian immigrants used to gather to play Bocce at the home of the Pavoni family. Mama Pavoni made roasted chicken and pasta and when her stepdaughter decided to open a restaurant in the basement of the family home, called the Bocce Club. Specialty of the house: dinner of roast chicken, bathed in butter and olive oil and seasoned with rosemary, accompanied by an antipasto, roasted potatoes as well as French fries and tomato-sauced pasta.

"Gigantic dinners of roast chicken and pasta, served family style, are a Rhode Island custom and the specialty of several institution-sized eating halls north of Providence. The Bocce Club is where the tradition began in the 1920s, when people used to come to the Pavoni ..."   [Read More]

Here's Bocce Club's claim to fame. Note the herbs spangled on the chewy-crisp and utterly delicious chicken skin. Note also two kinds of potato on the plate.

The chicken dinner comes with your choice of soup or salad. Portuguese soup is heavily salted and contains white beans, kale, carrots, bacon, and noodles. Delicious!

Each Rhode Island restaurant that serves the state's traditional chicken dinner has its own twists on the formula. At the Bocce Club, the salad isn't just garden stuff. It also is apportioned with shreds of cheese and twigs of salami as well as a couple of pepperoncini.

For reasons I cannot explain, we always get lost when looking for anything in Rhode Island. The Bocce Club is no exception. The car's GPS was stymied as we drove towards the outskirts of Woonsocket.

Pasta with red sauce is an essential side dish at Blackstone Valley chicken dinners. This version is OK, but no reason to waste calories when the chicken is so good.

Dinner is big enough, so don't ask why we ordered cheese spread beforehand. We regret having done so, because it was bland and boring.
