Angel's Diner

209 Reid St., Palatka, FL - (904) 325-3927
Florida's oldest diner is a genuine unrepentant hash house, serving cheap eats round the clock. Breakfast is fine, but the most celebrated dishes are the hamburgers (up to one-pounders) and freshly made onion rings.

"If you love diners, you owe it to yourself to visit Angel's, which boasts that it is Florida's first, established in 1932. We came for breakfast, so we never got to try the hand-pattied hamburgers and freshly made (not frozen) onion rings, which appear to be the menu's ..."   [Read More]

You get your choice of hash browns or grits if you order eggs for breakfast. Although pooled with butter, the grits were more notable for their grainy weight than for flavor.

Coffee is served in thick mugs. Beyond them, you can see a big silver bowl filled with just-cut slices of onion waiting to be battered and fried.

Angel's biscuit is ok, but chewy rather than fluffy and altogether somewhat less than angelic. Perhaps real butter might have improved it more than did the Country Pride spread.

The signature house drink is a Pusalow: chocolate milk flavored with vanilla syrup poured over crushed ice. Very refreshing, even at breakfast!

We automatically have a soft spot for any restaurant that boasts a poor man's special on its menu.
