Cliff's Dairy Maid

1475 Rt. 46, Ledgewood, NJ - (973) 584-9721
Cliff's is an old-fashioned drive-in with great homemade ice cream (hard and soft-serve) as well as a menu of hot dogs and hamburgers. Dining is at picnic tables or in your car.

"Since it opened in 1975, Cliff's has become a beloved part of the landscape along Route 46 in Ledgewood, New Jersey, just a hop off I-80. It is a modest-sized drive-in (no indoor seating) with a large parking lot and a grove of picnic tables in back. Its claim to fame ..."   [Read More]

Signs touted soft mint as the flavor of the month. I was intent on sampling the chocolate soft-serve, which is my benchmark when tasting ice cream. Oh, happy day: Cliff's offers a double-flavor twirl, so I was able to enjoy both -- a dandy combo.

The 5-ounce patty is pre-made and frozen, but sucks in enough smoky flavor as it cooks to be an agreeable drive-in burger.

'I before E, except in New Jersey' ... where the word wiener is spelled e-i, rather than i-e. This chewy, wrinkled Texas foot-long is nestled in a crisp-toasted bun and topped with peppery chili redolent of cumin and onions that have been stewed to absolute limpness. They're a sweet contrast to the chili they blanket.

Cliff's is a local favorite, but it is a great place for travelers along I-80 to know about. It is less than a mile from the interstate exit.

Cliff's has been attracting customers since it was opened in 1975 by Cliff Freund, who was a local high school teacher.

For those of us who don't live nearby, Cliff's ice cream menu is a little frustrating. A multitude of tempting different flavors demands some hard choices. I selected Mounds Bar and was not disappointed. The smooth, pure ice cream is well-served by its infusion of chocolate and coconut shreds.
