Coletta's

1063 S Parkway East, Memphis, TN - (901) 948-7652
Coletta's is an old-style Italian-American restaurant that supplements a menu of spaghetti, lasagne and parmigianas with barbecue pizza and barbecue salad. Although it looks rundown from the outside, it is a very friendly, welcoming place, well-loved by large numbers of regulars.

"Coletta's is the oldest restaurant in Memphis, and it looks it. The outside is forlorn and needs intensive spiffing up. In the door, there isn't a friendlier, warmer eatery in all of Memphis, its staff of good ol' girls eager to help strangers as well as legions of ..."   [Read More]

No one can pinpoint when Coletta's kitchen came up with barbecue pizza, but the restaurant does claim to have introduced more familiar Italian pizza to Memphis in the 1950s. I like the crust, I like the pork and I like the sauce, but to my taste buds there is a certain disharmony about the presence of the rich mozzarella.

There is a lot of smoky pork on Coletta's barbecue salad. We got this one with Italian vinaigrette (on the side), which provided a lovely halo to the meat.

For $1.99 you can add a length of Coletta's homemade Italian sausage to any meal. It comes dressed with Italian 'gravy,' NOT barbecue sauce!

You no longer see too many placemats that offer an education. Coletta's explains, among other things, that 'Italy is well-known for its great tasting foods.'

Many years ago Jane and I wrote a book called 'Elvis World,' in which we detailed many of The King's likes and dislikes, including his food preferences. At the time, we did not come across any evidence of a love for pizza, but we're happy to take Coletta's word that it was his favorite pizzeria. It's only a short distance from Graceland. His authority is acknowledged by this wall of photos, album covers and movie posters.

There are two Coletta's in Memphis. This one, on South Parkway, is fairly grim looking. But don't let its exterior dissuade you from a visit. The inside is warm and welcoming, and the menu is genuine Americana.
