Charlie the Butcher

1065 Wehrle Dr., Buffalo, NY - (716) 633-8330
An essential stop for anyone who wants to sample Buffalo's unique "beef on weck, slathered with horseradish. Place your order at the front window with its fabulous view of the carving block, then pay and find a seat at the low-low counter or a table topped with oilcloth. All seats provide a nice view of the kitchen, where you’ll see Charlie himself, with a large staff of accomplished helpmates, slicing cabbage, tending soups, and cutting beef to order.

Not only the two beef on weck we ordered, but also the sweet potato fries: both were great!

Beef on weck with the homemade horseradish, which is delicious! It is so good that on our way home from our trip to New England, we stopped again (we were there the first day of the trip as well).

Charlie the Butcher has a large menu, but is best known for their beef on weck, which is one of Buffalo's best.

After ordering your beef on weck, it's great to be able watch it get carved by hand. And here is where the action takes place.

This little hallway is where you place your order. Along with the regular menu on the overhead sign, make sure to check out Charlie's specials on the blackboard.

Charlie the Butcher is a no-frills kind of place where the emphasis is on the food.

Aside from the glory of Charlie's beef on weck, we don't know too many other eateries that offer four different kinds of sausage every day.

What you cannot see in this photo of a roast turkey sandwich is the cranberry orange relish I was about to apply. This sweet stuff is a Charlie specialty, and it makes the turkey sing!

Driving around upstate New York in September, we saw a lot of corn fields. We assume this delicious roasted ear came from one of them.
