"A friend and I ate there once when Magda was still alive. She looked at me and said, "What are you?" A bit bewildered, I looked at my friend (who knew I was Hungarian) and he motioned and whispered "Hungarian, dummy." So I told Magda and she said that I looked like ..."   [Read More]

"I have been going to the Goulash Place for as long as I can remember. Contrary to what the other reviewers have said, Magda was a wonderful woman who you had to get to know; once you did, you loved her. I heard that she recently passed away, which is quite sad. On ..."   [Read More]

"I am a real fan of the Goulash Place. Magda, who used to oversee the restaurant, has departed this realm. Her husband, always very pleasant, remains, along with a polite waitstaff. The food is sublime, well-spiced, and delicious. The cabbage in particular, served ..."   [Read More]

We weren't going to have an appetizer, but chef John Aczel decided we needed to try the day's chicken soup. Loaded with rough-cut vegetables, large pieces of tender chicken and threads of delicate noodle, it is one of the most delicious chicken soups we've ever spooned into.

Of the three kinds of goulash on the menu, we like Transylvanian best. It is small cubes of ridiculously tender pork laced with limp and luscious sauerkraut.

At first poke, chicken paprikash slides off its bones. This is the smaller, lunch-size portion.

The Goulash Place Sampler Plate is a good option for people who can't decide whether they want pork, veal, or chicken. That red cabbage in the center is especially yummy.

This is an appetizer-size portion of stuffed cabbage. At $2.95 it is a giant bargain. At any price, it is delicious comfort food.
