Miss Monticello Diner

199 Broadway, Monticello, NY - (845) 791-8934

If diners make you happy, you'll like to pull off Route 17 in New York and stop for a meal at the Miss Monticello. It is a mid-century classic with paper placemats that have advertising for local businesses (including an emu ranch and an equipment rental company located on Bon Jovi lane). The front dining area is all bright pink and aqua (the rear room is more sedate), the waitstaff is brisk and efficient, the menu is a roster of hash house standards ranging from old-fashioned Americana – meat loaf, hot hamburgers, omelets of all kinds – to such Grecian fundamentals as gyros and spinach pie. In addition to normal sandwiches, the menu lists hot pitas, wraps, and triple-deckers.

We occupied a front-room booth reading some of the newspapers strewn about by previous customers while we eavesdropped on two local ladies in an adjoining booth where they each chatted on separate cell phones as they waited for stacks of pancakes to be delivered. We had a breakfast Dr. Atkins would have loved: a Swiss cheese and tomato omelet with double bacon on the side (hold the spuds and toast), and a gyro, which is "Grecian Delight" brand affair with not-too-spicy meat loaded into a hot pita with cool cucumber sauce and garnishes, French fries on the side.

The desserts in the case behind the counter weren't all that enticing, but the piece of cheesecake we did sample turned out to be a New York classic. Great with a cup of strong coffee.

The Miss Monticello is not a gourmet destination, but it's good to know about if you are traveling along Route 17 with an appetite, especially at an odd hour.
