Andre's Cajun Cracklins

12910 Highway 190 West, Erwinville, LA - (225) 627-4600

"Boy de good, yeh," is Andre's motto; and the Cajun accent is no affectation. At this roadside stand next to a convenience store, you will find exemplary boudin blanc, crawfish (live or boiled), local-caught crabs, and super-succulent cracklins.

We were particularly smitten with Andre's fried turkey wings. They are big handfuls with a crunchy crust and dripping-moist meat that slides away from the bone with ease. Cracklins are melt-in-the-mouth strips. And the boudin is a local classic. Buy it by the foot-long link; and you better have a sharp knife, for its natural casing doesn't tear easily. Inside is a savory soft mélange of pork and rice with a gentle spice kick. A link such as this probably ought to be fork food, eaten off a plate. But we managed to rip ours open and devour its filling with only minor grease-drippage on hands and lap.

For dessert, Andre's has exemplary pralines. Oh, and if you find your cupboard bare of hog lard, Andre's has that, too: $15 for a five-gallon jar.

No place to sit here. It is strictly a take-out stand.

This turkey wing has real crunch, but is unbelievably succulent near the bone.

Boudin has a luxurious flavor. We tore open this long link from Andre's and ate it off the trunk of our rental car.

We hardly noticed Andre's as we pulled into the convenience store nearby. We're glad we did. Proprietor Barbara Andre was delighted to walk us through her take-out-only menu, from pickles to pig tails.

Ultra-rich cracklins are a favorite snack in Cajun country. They're probably not high on the health-food honor roll, but they're good for your soul.

The next time you get a hankering for pickled pig lips, Andre's is the place to come. They've always got a jar on hand.
