Wow. Ahem, WOW! My wife and I went to Maine Diner in early November, mid-afternoon, so we had our pick of seating. Their signature lobster pie, was utterly fantastic, unctuous and hearty... worth the trip up from Boston just for that. The crab cakes, while very good, were more like salmon cakes in shape and consistency, so if you're expecting them to be like Maryland crab cakes, remember, this is MAINE.

Speaking of Maryland-like stuff, the she-crab soup is superbly thick and satisfying, and the hot lobster roll is just as good as its southern New England counterpart, toasted top-loader bun and all.

Somehow we managed to have enough room left after this gastric orgy to share a piece of their incredible blueberry pie. I've never before had one where the filling was so dense that it didn't run out. Not to diss other blueberry pies but this is in a class all its own. We'll always remember the Maine.

Here is one great lobster roll, presented in a toasted bun with plenty of butter for drizzling on as you need it. Note how glistening moist and hunky the lobster is.

A signature dish, lobster pie is made from a family recipe. For lobster lovers, it is unspeakably savory. And by the way, those mashed potatoes in the background are the real McCoy.

A fine, not-too-decadent chocolate cake. With a few cups of coffee, it makes an ideal conclusion to a Maine Diner meal.

Baked beans like these are quintessentially Yankee: firm-bodied, earthy, laced with plenty of pieces of bacon, a little bit sweet but not at all sticky.

Those blue ribbons are still on the wall at the Maine Diner and they are still deserved!  This chowder was chock full of scallops, whole belly clams, shrimp and more.  A light, creamy broth was so good, I could have had the chowder without all the extra goodies.

Fortunately, I remembered to take a picture before totally polishing off this excellent bowl of corn chowder. Like the Maine Diner's celebrated seafood chowder, it is butter-rich.
