Michael's Beef House - Wheeling, WV

Posted by Michael Stern on October 22, 2000

Since 1967, Michael’s Beef House of Wheeling has been known for the goodness of its roast beef sandwich. Sliced thin and piled high inside a sesame seed bun, the beef is butter-rich, moist, and flavorful. It comes sprinkled with seasoned salt, and there is a condiment bar where you can add whatever else you want. If you need more than good, simple roast beef, cheese is available to top it; and there are other sandwiches on Michael’s menu, too: ham, turkey, reuben, hot pastrami, kosher corned beef, and chicken salad. On the side, you can get potato chips, cole slaw, salad, or extra pickle. That’s about all there is to it.

Michael’s is not a formal restaurant. It is a food stand with an order window. Like a kiosk in a modern mall food court, it attracts a lunch crowd of busy folks in the midst of a shopping day. In this case the food court is part of the wondrous 150-year-old Centre Market, a place that was once the town square of Wheeling, where citizens went to shop, where politicians spoke to crowds, and where farmers brought their produce to sell. Restored and refurbished, the Market is once again a hub of commerce in the heart of the City of Lights, and a great place to browse and to eat. Once you get your beef sandwich at Michael’s order window, you carry it to a table in the market, unwrap it, and dine as shoppers stroll through the marketplace around you.
