Wheel Inn

Main St. (at the end of the ramp off I-10), Cabazon, CA - (909) 849-7012

Wheel Inn is one of my favorite stops on the way from Phoenix to Orange County. If I pull out of PHX early, I always wait until I see the big EAT sign, to stop in for a bite. The interior is so kitschy, from the "art" on the walls and in the back room (which you go through on the way to the bathrooms) to the middle-aged waitresses dressed in Wilma and Betty outfits.

Food is always top notch; I really enjoy the biscuits and gravy, and the omelets are very good. The pancakes? Well, you better be hungry. Can't say as I've ever eaten anything but breakfast at the Wheel, but the selection of pies looks mighty tempting.

Overall, the Wheel Inn is an oasis in the desert, and a welcome break from the long drive between the two cities.

My waitress repeatedly told me this was the best banana cream pie in the world. Though I wouldn't go that far, the pie was still creamy and dense, with plenty of banana slices.

Wheel Inn specializes in comfort food, like this fine hot roast beef sandwich.

Mid-afternoon at the Wheel Inn. The only other customer and the waitress are entranced by the movie on the Disney Channel.

4am: Cabazon, California. The Wheel Inn is open round the clock. Its backyard Apatosaurus glows against the night sky.

Inside the door in the dinosaur's tail is a staircase that leads to a second-story souvenir shop.

Huge dinosaur feet frame the Wheel Inn, which is actually a modest-sized truck stop diner.

The dino burger is a double (this one with grilled onions). The French fries are cut here and fried to order: delicious!
