Magnolia's

21 Front St., Patterson, NY - (845) 878-9759

Magnolia’s moved to its new location in the beginning of 2007; and while it no longer has the pretty view of Lake Gleneida, it maintained all its personable charm. On Front Street opposite the train tracks in Patterson, the old storefront is flooded with light and filled with delightful bric-a-brac that makes me comfortable just to look around. In 2011, founder KC Scott sold the restaurant to new owners, but as of this writing, the place and the menu look unchanged, and the breakfast I had was very good.

There are awesome-looking salads and some hot meals, but I am smitten with the sandwiches. A blackboard lists specials; the regular repertoire includes a Local Hero portabello mushroom and eggplant sandwich on focaccia bread and “Ludington” cheese and tomato sandwich on hearth bread (named after Revolutionary War heroine Sybil Luddington). I also love the Cortland, which is grilled chicken, Havarti cheese, apples, and peppercorn dressing in a tomato wrap, and the Catalina, an assortment of vegetables, including delicious roasted peppers, in an herb wrap. I very much enjoyed the organic, grass-fed hamburger and a blackboard special wrap called turkey romano: smoked turkey, provolone, olives, carrots and sun-dried tomato dressing on a parmesan wrap.

Order at the counter, grab your beverage from the cooler to the left, and the staff brings your meal to the table when it’s ready. It’s a real Roadfood kind of eating experience: quick, breezy, inexpensive, and good-tasting.

A cross-sectional view of the Local Hero sandwich shows the multiple layers that make it so delicious. That focaccia bread is itself wonderful, and those parts of it that absorb vinaigrette or juices from the grilled portabella mushroom are especially irresistable.

Turkey Romano was written on the daily-special board when I visited the new Magnolia's. It is an excellent mix of smoked turkey, provolone, carrots and olives with sun-dried tomato dressing on a Parmesan wrap.

Chocolate and hazelnuts are a great pair, and this chocolate hazelnut brownie packs their full flavor. It is moist, rich, and totally satisfying.

I love the idea of carrot cake because it is so crazy-rich and super-fattening and yet, because it has the word carrot in its name, it sounds like health food. This big, beautiful carrot cupcake may not be doctor-recommended, but it is most definitely Stern-recommended.

You can get a regular hamburger or pay extra for this extra thick one made of chemical-free, grass-fed beef. It is dense and fresh-tasting and it comes on a whole wheat bun.

On Front Street in the village of Patterson, Magnolia's looks to be thriving.
