Doogie's

2525 Berlin Turnpike, Newington, CT - (860) 666-6200
Posted By Tom Davis on 8/2/2005 6:56:00 PM
We ordered the two foot dog and a lobster roll to split. The lobster roll was buttery and quite tasty but not overflowing with lobster. Still, definitely worth ordering. My dining partner is not as adventurous as I am, so we ordered our hot dog plain and added our own condiments. I would have ordered the works - chili, cheese, sauerkraut, etc. But I ate my portion (two good size hunks) with mustard, onions, and Doogie's special hot relish. Awesome! We did observe a rather large young man consume two of the 2 footers with chili. I could tell he was a seasoned vet. Check this place out. You'll enjoy yourself.

Ahh, wiener forever! All kinds of toppings are available, including beans, chili, and pulled pork, but being a man of simple taste, I like mine with only mustard and Doogie's excellent hot relish

Doogie's boasts that it serves the 'Best Philly Outside Philly.' It is mighty good, especially the chunky, moist, full-flavored beef and caramel-sweet onions. The cheese here is a little wan, but I managed to polish it off with ease!

Options include: BBQ sauce, hot peppers, lettuce & tomato.

Doogie's is an inconspicuous drive-in on the Berlin Turnpike. It is easy to miss, unless you look for the Ruth's Chris Steak House next door. The two eateries are about as different as restaurants can be, except for the simple fact that both define their own form of excellence.

The two-footer was off the menu for a while, but returned in full glory in March, 2012.

Not everything at Doogie's is huge. Last time we visited, one of the day's specials was a basket of mini corn dogs. Our friend Jim Rains, a native Texan, believed that these little dogs were nearly as good-tasting as those served at the Texas State Fair: high compliment indeed!

Just for the record, I photographed this two-foot hot dog before putting on any condiments. The picture does show how nicely the taut skin of the wiener gets charred on the grill.

On a turnpike crowded with come-hither signs and billboards, Doogie's is a relatively modest place. But its cuisine is a cut above.

Doogie's dogs are cooked on the grill, then charred over coals if desired. Two-footers, waiting to be cooked, are in the background.
