Kono’s Surf Club is at Crystal Pier on the Pacific Ocean. It is a supremely casual place with some indoor tables, but when the weather is nice (which it usually is), many customers dine under umbrellas at tables on the patio, where the clean air is filled with the sound of surf. It is also possible to carry your paper plate along the boardwalk and enjoy your bacon and eggs in direct sight of incoming waves and the surfers who ride them.

The lunch menu is a veritable picnic: excellent, fully-dressed hot dogs, satisfying cheeseburgers, BLT sandwiches, and good French fries to accompany anything else. Good as lunch may be, it is breakfast that has people lining up out the door to get to the order counter inside. There is nothing really exotic on the breakfast menu, but everything served is high quality, and portions provide ample caloric intake for a day of beachside fun. Of special note is the item listed on the overhead menu as “Big Breakfast #1”: two eggs, bacon, a toasted English muffin, a pair of pancakes, and a good-size portion of excellent fried potatoes. We are also fond of Kono’s breakfast burritos, loaded with eggs, potatoes, and green chilies.

Kono’s also has a fully-equipped coffee bar on the patio outside, where all manner of espresso drinks, plain and fancy, are available for leisurely sipping.
