I hadn't been by Joe's for quite some time, but business today lead me through the heart of downtown Gilbert and, since it was lunchtime, I thought I'd pop in for a little Q. Joe's is one of those destination places for a lot of folks. It has a reputation for good pecan-smoked BBQ with a clean and friendly atmosphere. The building itself has been there since 1929. They have done a great job in the dining room with lots of nicknacks including a beautifully restored John Deere tractor.
Some great meat choices include brisket, pulled pork, hot links, pork ribs, and bone-in chicken. The plates are served up by weight; one can decide on a 3/4-lb mixed sampler, a 1/2-lb meat plate, or sandwiches of either 1/3-lb or 1/4-lb.
Side items are included with your order: choose from slaw, potato salad, corn on the cob, cheesy potatoes, BBQ pit beans, or mac and cheese. Other noteworthy items are their gigantic baked potatoes, which you can order stuffed with your choice of meat; and for dessert, among several choices there is the root beer cake... wish I had room to try that!
Since it was 78 degrees and sunny, I decided to sit out on a picnic table under the shade trees in the big backyard to eat. I decided on the 1/2-lb plate with brisket and pork ribs, sides of cheesy potatoes and BBQ pit beans. I also got my hands on an ice cold Stewart's cherry and cream soda pop to wash it down.
The ribs were finger licking good, and pulled away from the bone with just the slightest tug. The brisket had a nice smoke ring and was moist and flavorful. It did not need the sauce... I have to remember next time to order without. Additional sauces are available; the hot one is fired up with habeneros. Also available at the condiment station are pickles, sweet peppers, diced red onions and jalapenos.
I really like Joe's. It is quick, consistent and very good Q. Is it the best in town? Probably not. But it is right up on the list to be sure, winning several awards over the years.
"The 1/2-lb meat plate comes with your choice of one or two meats and one or two sides. I had the brisket and pork ribs, with cheesy potatoes and BBQ pit beans. An ice cold Stewart's cherry and cream soda pop to wash it all down really hit the spot!"
