66 Diner

1405 Central Ave. NE, Albuquerque, NM - (505) 247-1421

Upon arrival in Albuquerque, I decided to try 66 Diner, after reading about it on Roadfood.com. I must say I was not disappointed. All food was served fast and fresh, and I really enjoyed the classic diner atmosphere.

I was a little taken aback when the Southwestern burger was served open-faced (it said so on the menu), but I enjoyed it nevertheless. The chocolate milk shake was one of the best I've ever had, and was served the classic way - with the metal mixer on the side for you to pour yourself seconds.

Open-face Southwestern burger. Didn't realize it was an open-face sandwich when I ordered it, but I still enjoyed it.

The Teeny Weeny Sundae is the perfect $.99 dessert when you've already indulged in some of the famous 66 Diner meals.

One little condiment cup holds a pool of thick fudge sauce, topped with a small (1/4 cup?) scoop of ice cream, then finished with whipped cream, peanuts, a drizzle of fudge, and a cherry.

Chilies are fundamental to New Mexican food, even at the 66 Diner, which is more hash house than native-foods restaurant.

It's a handsome place by day; at night, the 66 Diner glows.

Central Avenue in Albuquerque is a bonanza of reminders of what Route 66 used to be like through most of the Southwest.
