Abbott's Lobster in the Rough

117 Pearl St, Noank, CT - (860) 536-7719

Everyone in the state talks about going to Abbott's for a seafood feast. I thought I would give it a try. Parking is tough, but doable. The wait to order is long, but there are entertaining signs, and there's the menu to ponder while waiting. The waitstaff is efficient, and friendly enough.

But the prices and the setting are ridiculous. There is never a clean table, and while there are some sort of wires overhead to keep the seagulls from dive-bombing your food, the birds manage to leave their "remnants" everywhere. It looked like we were dining on an abandoned seashore of a country under attack!

While the food is good... it isn't great, not at these prices! I much prefer dining at Capt. Scott's in New London for the same effect that Abbott's was trying for, only it is cleaner, and the prices are more affordable.

This is a large lobster (3-4 pounds) split in half for the two of us. As good as in Maine!

We think Abbott's clam chowder is the perfect Rhode Island style clear chowder. No tomatoes, no milk or cream, just essence of clam.

Abbott's open-air dining tables couldn't be more atmospheric. This is the quintessential setting for a shoreline feast. (photo courtesy of Jerry Mears)

There's a variety of dining settings available. One popular option is on the pier. You'll see the occasional boater tie up here for a lobster visit.

At some point many years ago, this array of thin wires was installed above the outdoor dining area and, voila, gull problem solved!

There will be a sign indicating what big lobsters are available that day, with current prices.

The menu doesn't change much through the years (prices do). Pretty much everything is good - even the hot dog (we haven't tried the peanut butter and jelly).

This is Abbott's as you walk from the parking lot. Menu to the right, order counter straight ahead.

Did you order a big lobster? You'll have to wait for it to cook. There's no better way to pass the time than with a bunch of Abbott's sweet steamers.
