Slyman's is a deli located in Cleveland, Ohio. They have been serving corned beef for about 40 years. Let me say that there is a reason why the website brags that they are "Cleveland's favorite deli." You can find some of the BEST corned beef here. Unfortunately, they are only open until 2:00 for dining inside; however, they do open at 6 AM for breakfast. I'm sure breakfast is good here too, but the corned beef is their specialty!

Bring someone with you, because you will need two people to eat one of their sandwiches (the sign brags they have "Cleveland's biggest corned beef sandwich"; in fact, it probably is the biggest in the state of Ohio!). You can get a plain corned beef sandwich, but the Reuben is the one to get. It is grilled, with sauerkraut and cheese, but it still has the full flavor of their corned beef. Located not far from downtown Cleveland, Slyman's is a must!

Slyman's menu has a long list of lingo for ordering your corned beef sandwich. This one is 'natural,' meaning plain. Other options are 'mummy' (mayonnaise and mustard), 'smurf' (Swiss cheese and mustard), 'wack' (on whole wheat instead of rye), and 'grill brick' (griddle-sizzled bread only, hold the corned beef).

Like the corned beef, brisket is sliced thin. But any resulting dryness is compensated for by cascades of gravy.

The hearty chicken noodle soup was the perfect tonic on a blustery January day.

Salty, spicy, with some corned beef thrown in, this was one terrific hot pastrami sandwich!

The corned beef Reuben is the best! More than enough for two people, it has both the famous corned beef and the added flavor of a Reuben.

If you visit Slyman's in the morning, the corned beef hash is the way to go.

Glass brick windows are big in Cleveland. This picture makes the dining room at Slyman's appear to be a meditative place. It is not. It is loud and happy.

An endangered species: the old-fashioned urban deli.

Slyman's is located in an historic old building. It's a shame I forgot to ask what it once was.
