Thanks to ChiTownDiner and his lovely wife Patti, we’ve now been indoctrinated into the culinary cult of Freddy’s Pizzeria in Cicero. Far from simply a pizza place, however, Freddy’s is a classic Italian grocery, stocking a dizzying array of domestic and imported items and the finest take-out food. It is a neighborhood hub of activity in an immigrant district that was once dominated by Czechs, Germans, and Al Capone’s gang of Italians. The quality here is exceptional and makes Freddy’s the type of place that everyone wants in their own neighborhoods.

With so many gorgeous foods behind the glass, it’s impossible to commit to one—so why not sample? The stuffed gnocchi was wonderfully tender and doughy. The chicken was tender and smothered with a thick tomato slice and melted mozzarella. The salad was comprised of mixed greens, topped with a tomato layered with mozz and prosciutto and drizzled with balsamic vinaigrette. The pepperoni bread, like similar rolls found in different corners of the country, is simply good meat and good bread, with no cheese or other fillings that might detract from the oven-fresh taste. The pizza is baked in large sheets with sweet sauce blanketed by cheese. Everything we tasted was light-years away from the heavy, Americanized Italian food with which commercial society has become saddled.

As an added bonus, Freddy’s is also a homemade gelateria, serving some of the creamiest and most flavorful gelato we’ve ever had. The gelati and Italian ices are absolutely not to be missed, as they are the perfect consistency and bursting with natural flavors. The classic Neapolitan gelato is served with crescents of chocolate and strawberry surrounding a dish of vanilla, but their basil gelato and lemon ice are truly sublime. Since 1968, Freddy’s has been a mainstay in Cicero, and local access reporter Frank Mathie said it best: “Freddy’s has the best Italian food in Chicago, and we’re not even in Chicago!”

Chicago Magazine dubbed this “the best gelato in all of Chicago,” and we agree: rich, creamy, and packed full of flavor.

Only one of the many sandwich choices, made on the spot. The beef with sweet peppers is delicious.

Sold by the piece or by the whole loaf. We purchased a whole loaf to take home. It reheats nicely!

The lemon meringue gelato is really unique. Freddy's has several gelato flavors, as well as Italian ice.
