Texan Cafe

207 East St., Hutto, TX - (512) 846-2885

The Texan Café takes its name in earnest. Its menu is a roster of Lone Star fare, including hunks of meat that range from a six-ounce chicken-fried round steak to a twenty-ounce sirloin (listed on the menu as Lota Bull). In between there are ribeyes and T-bones, hamburgers, pepper burgers, and bacon cheeseburgers. The menu even lists chicken, catfish, and shrimp for the oddball non-beef eater who finds himself inside this meat haven. (In fact, a non meat eater can find great satisfaction in a plate of four vegetables – excellent vegetables – that are themselves suitably Texan.)

The side-dish repertoire includes blackeyed peas (a must to accompany chicken fried steak), fried okra, pinto beans, mashed potatoes, and even penne pasta (!) with butter, herbs, and parmesan cheese. In our experience, these vegetables are good, so good you may just finish off a serving as you are plowing through your T-bone or the fantastically-sized twenty-four ounce chicken-fried Angus round steak (known as the Texan Platter). If you do need more beans or peas or potatoes, seconds of any side dish are provided on the house.

One of the best things about The Texas Café isn’t on the menu and isn’t made in the kitchen. It is the sign outside: a larger-than-life statue of a bull by the side of the road, with the flag of Texas flying overhead. In the background are real Texas cows, grazing the nearby grassland.

On a night full of great food, all three of us agreed that the chicken and dumplings were the star. Keep an eye on the specials board, since this isn't on their regular menu. The sweet potato fries and green beans also are worthy of praise.

Ham steak in a root beer sauce? You have to admire the way these Texans think!

Behind this big statue of a bull at the site of the original Texan Cafe is a field where genuine Texas bovines graze.
