Charlie's Pool Room

1122 East Boulevard, Alpha, NJ - (908) 454-1364

I grew up in Warren County, and have lived in the northwest New Jersey area for nearly 45 years and I NEVER ATE AT CHARLIE'S POOL ROOM! I corrected this egregious error in my dining behavior recently, chowing down on three mealies, further sustained by tales told by John Fencz, who was in the middle of a story about how the local health inspector almost shut the place down in 1993, when I had to leave, over two hours into my visit. I will be back very soon to again savor Grandma Fencz's secret sauce and the bite of those hot pepper slices, bringing a friend.

This place is a must!

Besides the addictive flavor, what really strikes us about the mealies is the uniformity of appearance. Each mealie has the onions and peppers chopped the same size and in the same location on the hot dog.

Mealies are prepared with Grandma's secret recipe for Hungarian hot sauce, chopped onions, and slices of hot peppers. As you can see from the photo, these dogs are prepared with love.

Here is Joe and John delivering my Mealies: three dogs cooked to perfection with onion, homemade Hungarian hot sauce, hot pepper slices, and dill pickle spears.

It's very easy to miss this unassuming building. Believe me, it's worth the effort to search for it. The door on the left goes to the Pool Room.
