Mehlman Cafeteria

51800 National Road, St. Clairsville, OH - (740) 695-1000
Posted By Carrie Hill on 3/9/2011 11:35:00 AM
My husband and I were looking for a place for lunch while driving from Cincinnati to Philly one spring. We both did a rubberneck routine at the billboard, spotting the word "Cafeteria" (cafeterias are few and far between). We got off at the following exit, drove back along the two-lane road, passed it, still looking, turned around and found it along the south side of the road. When you see a parking lot filled with local cars, you know you're generally in for a treat.

It was well worth the hunt: we got the food we wanted and it was all delicious; homemade-quality. None of that huge-portions-minimal-taste kind of food found in chains. It's now on our list for future trips and I've recommended it to others traveling that way.

My tray at Mehlman's is loaded with cafeteria classics. Clockwise from bottom left: ham loaf in chicken gravy, macaroni and cheese, peach crumb pie, apple sauce, green beans, deviled eggs, and iced tea.

Typical of a Midwest cafeteria, the beginning of the line is where you will find all the pies, salads, and Jellos.

The picture doesn't do this justice, but it gives some indication of how, through the magic of cafeteria cooking (and cheese and margarine and bread), a simple green vegetable can be turned into a rib-sticking dish.

We enjoy looking at decades old menus, and we always marvel at the low, low prices (Beef Barbecue - 15 cents, Buttermilk - 5 cents). This contemporary menu practically seems like one of those.

A big place with the heart of a small town cafe but a state-fair menu
