Slows BBQ

2138 Michigan Avenue, Detroit, MI - (313) 962-9828

In the midst of a pretty nasty part of Detroit (which is saying something for Detroit), near the old Tiger Stadium, sits Slow's BBQ. I've been twice now, driving in from Ann Arbor, and can safely say this is some of the best BBQ in the area. Much more affordable than Zingerman's Roadhouse BBQ, and tastier too.

They use Niman Ranch products, as well as other local farmers, and have an excellent scene inside. Bar service or tables; open for lunch and dinner (and they stay open late).

Food is all served a la carte; you order sides along with your sandwich. You've got a choice of Texas toast or a kaiser roll (I always go with the toast). Sandwiches come out dry, but there are at least five different BBQ sauces on each table for you to experiment with. The Texas toast is deliciously buttery; sandwiches are piled high. The Reason (pictured) is pork butt and coleslaw topped with dill pickles: absolutely delicious, with a smokey flavor.

We go for lunch because it's less busy. Most evenings this place is packed to the gills, with a wait of an hour or more. Sometimes you can get lucky and squeeze in at the bar, but for the most part, it's a wait. They do take reservations for groups six or larger, for what it's worth. They also do takeout.

This is really delicious BBQ, well worth the trip.

Bacon, pulled pork, and ham are stacked on top of each other. Fabulous right off the line, it was made even better with the mustard sauce. A truly outstanding sandwich worthy of the praise heaped upon it.

Slows makes five sauces. All are good but two really stand out. Although the Apple and Sweet are nice, the Spicy (while not very spicy) is even better. The NC and Mustard sauces are, however, the clear winners. The NC hints strongly at Buffalo chicken wing sauce and clearly would be terrific on poultry. The mustard sauce has a nice honey like sweetness for great balance, perfect for pork.

Catfish is simply outstanding, crispy on the outside with gentle-textured fish inside. The light tempura doesn’t overpower the delicate flavor of the fish and the Creole mustard remoulade is an excellent complement.

Brisket enchiladas are not good enough for a second try but certainly are satisfying. One criticism I have is that the beef has very little Q taste. It tastes like beef but has no real Q hints.

Sandwiches are served without sauces, but each table has all five sauces waiting for you.

Pictured is the delicious Reason sandwich. They come without any extras, but potato salad for $2.25 or fries for a few bucks are available.
