Tal Bagels

2446 Broadway, New York, NY - (212) 712-0171
Posted By Michael Stern on 7/29/2008 6:23:00 PM
When you sink your teeth into a warm Tal Bagel, its outside skin audibly crunches. Beneath the skin, faintly sour dough is dense enough to provide a real chew. Good as Tal Bagels are hot from the store, when you take some home and slice them later in the day or even the next morning, they retain their tightly packed character (although the bliss of oven-freshness is gone) and they make extra-chewy toast.

Tal Bagels is a full-service deli with a wide array of cold cuts, cheeses, and smoked fish, plus hot breakfast sandwiches and every kind of muffin imaginable. For spreading on bagels, the deli case holds more than a dozen kinds of cream cheese, including excellent plain and scallion-laced cream cheese and a number of cheeses we’ve yet to have the courage to try -- made from tofu.

In our experience, Tal’s deli sandwiches are very nice, the smoked fish is okay, and the big cookies are good. But you’ll find delis all over town with meats and pastries of similar quality. A bagel this good is hard to find, even in New York City.

What's a New York deli without a spread of whole smoked fish and slabs of salmon to admire?

Tal is more than a bagel shop. At this 1st Avenue outpost, there is an extensive appetizing counter (appetizing is a NYC noun that refers to things like smoked fish, cream cheese spreads, egg salad, chopped liver, olives... ).

There are a few Tals around town. This one is on 1st Avenue between 53rd and 54th.

The word
"The word "appeetizing" under Tal Bagel's name does indeed describe the food. But it is also the proper Jewish name for the kind of deli that sells breads, baked goods, and smoked fish."
