Stockholm Pie Company

For those driving the Great River Road along the Wisconsin side of the Mississippi, there is a place you need to know about. Located in the tiny town of Stockholm (which had less than 100 people in the 2000 census) is the Stockholm Pie Company. A humble little place that has only been in business since 2008, this just might be the pie shop of my dreams!

Stopping by on a bright May morning, the aroma of fresh baked goods hit me as soon as I opened the door. There is a blackboard with a lengthy list of flavors, which you can buy per slice, per six-inch mini-pie, or as a whole ten-inch pie. At first, I was disheartened to find that my favorite pie, sour cream raisin, was not available because a previous customer came in and bought the entire pie. And they only make one of those pies a day. This is no mass-producing pie factory.

Cousin Johnny went for a slice of double lemon. The bottom layer is a sharp-tasting lemon chess pie, while the top layer is a light lemon custard, with cut up bits of lemon in it. He declared it the best slice of pie he has ever had! I had the apple pie baked in a bag. This is a tall stack of sweet apples, densely packed under a crumble top that reminds me of an apple crisp; another great slice of pie.

They also make great looking cinnamon rolls, savory pies (pear, bacon, blue cheese anyone?) and cookies with delicious fruit filling, which they call pie cookies.

So impressed by the pies, I mail ordered a couple home to me. There are only a few that the Stockholm Pie Company feels confident in shipping, but even after a couple days of transit, the blackberry pear had all the ladies in the office swooning.

When I arrived at 2pm, there was exactly one savory pie left: sausage apple cheese. The crust was a little soft because the pie had to get reheated in the microwave, but that in no way diminished its luscious savor.

After ordering four slices of pie, there was no room to try one of the cinnamon rolls. These beauties will have to wait until the next visit.

In what can only be called a momentary lapse of reason, Cousin Johnny was so excited by this great looking pie that he started into it before I could get my photo!

Though I would have preferred a meringue top, plus a stronger sour cream flavor, the homemade whipped topping was the real thing and the not-too-sweet filling had the perfect consistency.

Behind the camera are a few little tables and the order counter. I chose a seat at the table by the window in order to get good lighting for pictures of Stockholm's pies.
