Woody's Drive In

1630 E. State Street, Fremont, OH - (419) 332-9790

Fremont is a small city in northwest Ohio that is best known as the hometown of our 19th President, Rutherford B. Hayes. But, summertime in Fremont means only one thing; local favorite Woody's Drive In is open for business!

Just a few seconds after pulling into the big parking lot, we were warmly greeted by Amber, the car hop. Since it was our first visit, she gave us a menu, made some suggestions and said she would be right back to get our order. Our meal started off with a side of onion chips. These are about a third of the length of a typical onion ring and had a wickedly crunchy exterior. Ranch dressing comes with it for dipping. The made in house cole slaw was sweet and vinegary. The corn dog tasted very fresh, with a pleasantly moist inside. We tried a chili dog once we were informed they do make their own chili sauce, which had lots of pebbly meat and a slight hint of heat.

The signature item is a burger known as a Woody's Splitter. This contains two quarter pound patties, lots of cheese, lettuce, tomato, pickle, ketchup and oddly enough, a couple of onion rings. This is a huge burger and while it does take some effort, it is possible to eat it by hand. We also really liked the lake perch sandwich. A common item on menus this close to the Great Lakes, you get two lengths of sweet, crunchy fish on a long toasted bun. Delicious!

No matter what you eat here, you must wash it down with the creamy, homemade root beer. It comes in big, frosty mugs, tastes of vanilla and caramel and was exactly what we needed on a hot Summer day.

Amber, who along with her twin sister is a long time employee, took excellent care of us. Woody's typically opens in early April and closes in mid-August, when most of their young employees go back to school.

Woody's menu board shows the inexpensive prices. You won't spend a fortune here.

While we thoroughly enjoyed Woody's lake perch sandwich, we plan on trying the walleye on our next visit.

These onion chips were a welcome change from the typical french fries and onion rings.

Although we didn't particularly like the homemade chili sauce, we did like the fresh, chopped onion.

Ordering a corn dog at a Summertime only drive-in just seemed like the right thing to do.
