Gayle's is just the place to be if you were raised by a mom with Midwestern food sensibilities. Even more so if you had a Pennsylvania Dutch grandpa. Given that I had both, I was in seventh heaven at this gem of a diner.
I grew up feasting on scrapple made from my grandpa's recipe and this was the first time I had encountered it outside my mom's kitchen. Amazing! The cooks at Gayle's flatten each slice of scrapple really super-thin and then fry crisp, so that just the most delicious sliver remains juicy. Oh my. And then it comes with grits. And then it's under $10, which to my Seattle eating ways is nothing short of a miracle.
Do not miss this place! It sits just where the road from St. Petersburg curves into St.Pete Beach and is easily cruised by on your way to white sand beaches. Go early, grub at Gayle's, then hit the Gulf.
