Local frankfurter aficionados swear by The Original Hot Dog Shop out Forbes Ave. in Oakland. We love seven-inch dogs at The Big O as much as anyone, especially at 2 AM. But during normal lunch hour, downtown in the Steel City, there is another dog house we like a lot, as much for its breezy, street-smart ambience as for its selection of regular hot dogs, all-beef hot dogs, and firm-bodied kielbasas. One of any of these tube steaks with all the fixins and an order of fries (with cheese or gravy) makes an excellent snack; and for a somewhat more substantial meal, we recommend the fish sandwich. It’s a luscious, deep-fried one, available with cheese, lettuce, and tomato and, of course, fries on the side.

There are sparse counter-accommodations inside, but many customers prefer getting their food at the al fresco order window and dining on the sidewalk. This is street food par excellence!
