It is possible to procure all the American Spoon products from a mail order catalog or on line; but it’s a special treat to walk into one of the handful of American Spoon stores in northern Michigan, where you can sample a wide variety of what they make. At the heart of the store is a table on which dozens of jars are open around a platter of little crackers. Grab a tasting spoon, dip in, and see what suits your tastebuds best.

We happened to stop in the Charlevoix location just as they were expecting gelato machines to be installed, so we missed out on cherry gelato. But we’re not complaining, because we did get to taste grapefruit marmalade, cherry marmalade, cherry-berry nut mix (dried cranberries and tart cherries with almonds and pecans), roast apple and onion relish, and a host of various barbecue and grilling sauces.

For car-snacks during our trip, we bought bags of cherry poppers, which are freeze-dried, sugar-crusted cherries that are as addictive as popcorn, and chocolate covered cherries after which no Raisinet will ever taste the same!
