One of the highlights of Valley Stream. The booths are small because it's an old place! Ha ha. Everything is right for the price here.

Had open face roast beef with rye bread and fries. Roast beef was quite good and fries were somewhat above average. Portions were a good value for the price.

For dessert had "death by chocolate." A sundae with all kinds of chocolates and two scoops of ice cream. Very good. Total price before tip was $15.00

As a first time customer of this establishment, I wasn't impressed. The atmosphere is very stale. The sitting booths are very tight. If you are taller than six feet, you're going to have a problem. The service is really bad. I had to wave my arms to get the attention of the waitress.

The hamburger is at best average. I asked for my hamburger to be cooked rare. It came back medium. The fries are nothing special. I had the chocolate sundae. The chocolate chocolate chip ice cream tastes smooth but the homemade whipped cream didn't excite me. Your normal supermarket canned whipped cream is just as good. The sundae is almost enjoyable, except the waitress had dripped the hot fudge all over the glass and plate. It was a mess.

In July 1985 I read a newspaper article about the best ice cream in the New York City area. After visiting several of the ice cream parlours listed in the article, the one that I favored the most was Walt Itgen's Ice Cream Parlour located in the downtown village of Valley Stream Long Island.

Itgen’s is a classic, old-fashioned parlour that also serves as a luncheonette, soda fountain and sweet shoppe. Owned and operated by Walter and his sons, Walter Jr. and Mike, Itgen's has been making and serving their very own exquisitely rich and flavorful French Style ice cream for around thirty seven years. There are 25 flavors listed with seasonal favorites such as Peach.

You can choose from many varieties of sundaes to choose from including the 15 scoops Sock-It-To-Me Sundae. All can be drenched with your favorite toppings including marshmallow, butterscotch and hot fudge. Itgen's also makes it's own fresh whipped cream, which is a must on any dessert including the magnificent fresh hot waffle, with a smell that almost demands that you order it.

Itgen's also serve great luncheonette style food too. Sit down and order a cooling gorilla, a drink consisting of freshly squeezed fruits in an ice filled glass, and a country style burger and fries. These are not frozen patties but fresh beef, hand formed and slapped on the griddle. Or maybe an open-faced turkey sandwich carved fresh from the bird.

I've been a regular customer for seventeen years. Home cooking and reasonable prices makes Itgens a true roadfood experience.
