De Dutch

There are a handful of De Dutch Pannekoek Houses in Western Canada; and while Roadfood.com doesn’t normally direct people to franchised restaurants, our experience at the Calgary Pannekoek House was good enough to make an exception to that rule.

It is a tidy-clean little place with Dutch-themed décor and a few Dutch culinary souvenirs for sale, i.e. stroop syrup, which is a sort of molasses-sweet condiment suitable for pancakes, waffles or French toast.

As the name of the place suggests, pancakes are the house specialty; and they are available plain, topped only with a bit of powdered sugar or heaped with hash to become one hugely hearty meal. In our experience, the plainer is better. The simple pannekoek is a foot-wide cake barely one-quarter inch thick. More satisfying than an ordinary slimline crepe, one of these pancakes with a pitcher of (extra-cost) real maple syrup makes a delightful breakfast.

If you need variety, all sorts of things are available to pile atop the pancakes; the Dutch tradition is to use them as roll-ups to hold ingredients: bacon, cheese and eggs, ham and pineapple, sausage, fruits, even trail mix or granola. In our experience, none of these recipes is a bad idea; but they all do detract from the simple, elegant perfection of a single broad pannekoek on a plate.

Pancakes are surely as far removed from the Dutch experience as double-crusted pies are from the German one. The pancake is, for me, as genuinely American as apple pie. The Dutch association and the dinner plate-sized crepe gimmick aside, the food lacks the hardiness and gumption to be in this Roadfood.com pantheon. Michael neglects to mention that a plate of this will set you back about $13 to $16 (USD and CAD are at par at the time of this writing), something that would horrify most American diners.
