This review is for coffee addicts only.

If you find yourself traveling through the Mississippi Delta with a craving for coffee, you can find satisfaction at pleasant little place called the Bean Counter across from the courthouse in the town of Cleveland. We feel it’s important to note the Bean Counter’s existence because good coffee is a rarity in this region. Tea’s the thing to drink – sweet or unsweet – and it’s wonderful tea. If you need serious morning coffee, you are generally out of luck. If available, the coffee hereabouts is usually pretty wan.

Here in a converted gas station are strong brewed coffees and machines for extracting inky-black espresso, so you can have everything from a mocha latte or a cappuccino to a cup filled with nothing but eight shots of espresso (our choice on one caffeine-yearning day). In addition to coffee, the Bean Counter offers an array of chai teas, Italian sodas, and hot chocolate. To eat there are biscotti for dipping, scones and muffins, bagels and cookies. Sandwiches and a soup of the day are available at lunch.

Seating is coffee-house style: a random assortment of couches and tables in open space and conversation nooks. Very casual, very nice, very needed when the coffee monkey’s on your back.
