George & Pink is not a restaurant. It is a vegetable stand, open every day, year-round, from 8am to 8pm, run by Pink Brown and her father George. The growing season here in coastal South Carolina never ends and the Edisto Island soil is famously fertile, so the bins in this wooden, dirt-floored building always have something of interest.
In the winter, you’ll find beautiful potatoes, yams, squash, red and green peppers, and cabbage, as well as flavorful tomatoes. Starting early in the spring, Pink Brown gets in cantaloupes that are ultrasweet; and by mid-May the sweet corn starts coming. Pink told us that the corn is so delicious right on the cob that you don’t even want to cook it. Just peel off the husk and gnaw the full-flavored kernels right from the cob.
This is a charming island place, located down a long unpaved, tree-shaded road off Highway 174. All around the hut where vegetables are sold free-ranging chickens scratch and cluck and crow. And as you walk from your car, you’ll likely see Duke, Pink’s big lazy dog who likes to snooze in a large flower planter, oblivious to visitors.
