Harraseeket Lobster

Town Landing, Freeport, ME - (207) 865-3535

Dine at a picnic table overlooking the Freeport town harbor, the meal perfumed by the salt smell of the ocean and serenaded by the sound of an American flag flapping overhead. This is one of the nicest places west of Bath to plow into a shoreline meal with a glorious view. The specialty is boiled-to-order lobsters (also available live, to go), but don’t ignore the seafood baskets. Whole belly clams are giants, hefty gnarled spheres of golden crust enveloping mouthfuls of ocean nectar. On the side, you want onion rings: puffy circles of brittle sweet batter around a hoop of onion that still has crunch. Clam cakes are good, too, their puffy dough holding dozens of little nuggets of marine goodness. The chowder is wonderful, but best of all is the lobster roll, served splayed open in a broad cardboard dish and packed with briney-sweet chunks of meat. Have it with onion rings or an order of Fried onion middles (sweet, slick nuggets that are to fried rings what holes are to donuts); and conclude with a fudgy, hand-fashioned whoopie pie.

Now that the management has put an awning up over the picnic tables, you can dine outdoors even when it rains. They tell us that it does rain in Freeport, but every visit we have made to town in search of our favorite clam baskets and o' rings, the sun was shining brightly and gulls were swooping overhead through the blue, blue sky. It is almost painfully picturesque, this eat-in-the-rough jewel of a clam shack overlooking the South Freeport Harbor. But even if it were ugly, we would recommend it for the seafood baskets and the lobsters.

The lobster roll at $13.50 was very disappointing. The taste was OK, no better or worse than anyplace else in Maine. The size was, to put it generously, was small. I ordered the fries with the sandwich for an extra $1.00 and that's what kept me going through the afternoon. Harraseeket survives by it's location in Freeport with L.L. Bean and the other stores there with the throngs of people wanting a quick taste and view of Maine. I will not return there.

After a morning of shopping at the Freeport outlets, Harraseeket Lobster is more than a breath of fresh air. The views are spectacular and the food worth the wait. You can eat on the dock or inside a cozy dining room. Everything about this place exudes Maine and the food can't be beat. A really memorable experience.
