Baba À Louis

Route 11, Chester, VT - (802) 875-4666
Posted By Michael Stern on November 6, 2003 3:42 AM
Baba À Louis is mostly a bakery and only minimally a restaurant; and for those who find the smell of baking loaves and hot sweet pastries irresistible, it is doughy heaven. In the morning, no hot meals are served, but you can get coffee. To go with that coffee, the bakery shelves hold some of the most delicious sticky buns on the planet. Croissants are available, plain or filled, and they are buttery masterworks. Arrive at the right time early in the day and you can see steam escape from the yeasty swirls as you tear off shreds to savor.

Other confectionery wonders of note: blueberry squares, custard-filled éclairs, meringue bites, apple turnovers, brownies, ginger snap cookies, and date bars.

If you’ve less of a sweet tooth but are a bread lover, the list of available kinds includes French, sourdough, whole wheat, rye, cheese-herb, oatmeal, anadama, and cinnamon raisin. Call ahead and Baker John McLure will make white or whole wheat French to order.

Lunch is served cafeteria-style. There is pizza on the weekends; and Tuesday through Saturday, you can have a panini, open-face, or regular sandwich, quiche or soup or salad.

The bakery is a beautiful, high-ceiling cathedral of baking with sunlight streaming in windows high above. When you enter and stand at the counter deciding what to eat, you have a clear and inspiring view of the bakers at work – kneading dough and pulling hot loaves from the oven.

Note: the bakery is closed during April and most of November, but open again at Thanksgiving.

We go to Baba's quite often on our visits to Chester. All of their baked goods are marvelous, although they are best known for their sticky buns. I also love their granola and cinnamon raisin bread. The savory breads are great with soup.

And I'd be negligent if I didn't say that my sons love their chocolate croissants. They usually have fresh coffee (and, if I remember correctly, Wi-Fi), if you want to sit a spell. I'd recommend going if only for the beautiful architecture and the wonderful aromas of the place. (The little restaurant inside is decent, but not something I'd go out of my way for.)
