Jimmy's Hot Dogs

2555 Nazareth Road, Easton, PA - (610) 258-7545

Located in a strip mall. No place to sit; take-out only. They make nothing but hot dogs. Want something on the side? Have a drink and a bag of chips. Nothing else is available. Yet there's a line of people waiting to pick up their bags of 8, 10, even 12 dogs to go. Service is quick and businesslike at the small counter, but this place, with its quirky personality, does not in any way resemble a chain restaurant.

The dogs are steamed, and the standard garnish includes a pickle spear and chopped onions. Really quite a good combination, and one you can easily reproduce at home, but you don't. And the price? At last check, 85 cents each. Three or four of them will make a grand lunch, consumed sitting on the benches scattered around the shopping center or off the hood of your car.

I go to Jimmies every time I go to see my father in the Poconos. I remember going to the original place in NJ along the river when I was a little girl and that was over 50 years ago. They are inexpensive and great to eat!!! I always get the hot dogs with mustard, onion and pickles. I have a son who mentioned to a person he worked with that he was going to visit his grandfather in Wind Gap and he couls not wait to visit Jimmie's hot dog stand. He could not believe it when she said she knew about the place and goes there too. We live about 2 and a half hours from where Jimmie's is located. Every time I go to get the hot dogs there is at least 10 or more people in line. The hot dogs are the same since I was a little girt so many years ago and I make sure I get them every time I am in the area. It is always two hogs with mustard. pickles and onions.

Jimmy's Hot Dogs was originally located in Phillipsburg, NJ, just across the Delaware River from Easton. The same two guys have been serving up their scrumptious dogs since the 50's; I know because my dad used to walk across the bridge to Jimmy's with his parents as a kid, and later in life took us over for dogs when my brothers and I were young. Jimmy's moved to the shopping center in the 90's but it's still just as popular.

The steamed dogs are simple. You can get the dogs "with everything" (pickle, onion, mustard), or plain. The sides? Bags of chips, and there are sodas and milk in the cooler. The food is cheap and fast, less than a buck per hotdog.

There's nowhere to sit. Most people find benches in the shopping center or head to their cars, but it doesn't matter; the line is out the door every day. Every kid in the area grew up on Jimmy's dogs. A personal favorite combo is two plain with ketchup and a chocolate milk. I live in Boston now but whenever I'm home in PA I head to Jimmy's first thing.
