Curtis's Barbecue - Putney, VT

More a picnic than a restaurant, Curtis's serves ribs and chicken from the window of a bus to be eaten at outdoor tables. Curtis Tuff offers two sauces: mild and spicy, both of which are finger-licking good. On the side you want a nice baked potato, a cup of beans, and/or ears of sweet corn.

"Be warned: your two plates of ribs for $50 are going to be soaked in vinegar-flavored BBQ sauce. Just awful. Even the two couples seated next to us were complaining about this practice of DRENCHING the ribs and chicken in this terrible BBQ sauce. How people rave ..."   [Read More].

"I didn't meet Curtis, but his staff were the rudest people I have ever dealt with in a restauarant. I arrived late and they told me I had to take the ribs to go because they wanted to clean up. I assumed that meant I shouldn't use the picnic tables. So, I had a ..."   [Read More].

We never asked Curtis Tuff how he determined his place to be the 9th Wonder of the World. We were unaware that there was an Eighth!

On a sunny day, there's no place nicer to eat ribs and chicken than at a table in the meadow that adjoins the barbecue pits.

The truly great side dish at Curtis's is the baked potato, but these beans are not to be slighted. They're very Yankee -- toothsome and not too sweet -- and yet they are soulfully saturated with flavor.

Curtis offers spicy and mild sauce to go; and while the sauce is good, it's the ribs and chicken that we want to take with us when we leave.
