Moody's

1885 Atlantic Highway, Waldoboro, ME - (207) 832-7785

Alvah Moody attributes the success of Moody’s diner to the fact that it was the only place open round-the-clock between Bangor and Portland before the interstate highway was built; but that's just typical Downeast understatement. Moody's has thrived since 1935 because it serves good food at low prices and has remained as comfortable as an old slipper. Although it has changed over the years, evolving from a lunch wagon to a full-kitchen diner with counter, stools, and booths, and a 1994 facelift has added even more seats, it remains an honest roadside diner that is a bastion of unadulterated Yankee cooking.

Corned beef hash, omelets with home fried potatoes, and blueberry muffins and blueberry pancakes are the choice morning dishes. At lunch and dinner there are classic diner meals of meat loaf, corned beef, and pork chops, as well as some items that have a more distinct New England flavor. The seafood chowder is terrific, as are franks and beans and Yankee pot roast. You can even enjoy that little-known Downeast delight, fried tripe, and top it off with a dish of warm Indian pudding. There’s an only-in-Maine meal for you!

To many travelers up the Maine coast, Moody’s is known as a pie stop. Some five dozen pies are made daily, and available round the clock. Fruit pies and cream pies are lovely to look at and to eat; long-time favorites include nursery-nice custard pie dusted with nutmeg, four-berry pie, blueberry pie, and a walnut pie that is known state-wide.

5 star plus in our opinion. The baked goods are the best ever! "The warm 6 inch cinnamon bun was as close to heaven as you get." The scrambled eggs are the lightest and best ever (we know their secret). Chocolate chip cookies returned to PA brought rave reviews from our neighbors. A MUST food stop in Maine!

The lunchtime crowd was large but that didn't deter us and we're glad we waited. Service was good. The best part was desserts. Those pie crusts are unbelievably good. Don't miss the coconut cream pie and the walnut pie. Both outstanding and the walnut a unique and divine experience.
