Mudtruck

Astor Place, New York, NY - (212) 529-8766

We must confess to frequently drinking Starbucks coffee, but the coast-to-coast uniformity of the big chain leaves a bad taste in our mouthes. That's why we love to find independent coffee sources that know how to brew a seriously good cup of mud.

Case in point: The MudTruck, parked in New York at Astor Place across from Cooper Union. You'll find three Starbucks within a minute's walk of the sunny orange vehicle that bills its fare as "gourmet street coffee"; but counterculture java connoisseurs gladly wait their turn for cups of coffee and espresso, red eyes, black eyes, macchiatos, mochaccinos, lattes, and Americanos (and hot chocolate and tea, too). It's a wacky sort of place that you'd never mistake for the spawn of a large corporate entity, the sides of the truck decorated by an American flag with its stars in the form of a peace sign and a few amusing T-shirts for sale. For a good sense of the spirit of the place, visit its website.

Prices are lower than the big guy's too. One dollar buys a tasteful (no logo) ten-ounce white paper cupful of coffee that is smooth and cocoa-rich. Proprietor Nina Kay Berott told us she brews it from a mix of sixteen different beans, including some espresso. The pure espresso drinks live up to the Mud Truck name.
