Stash's

Stash's is hard to spot if you're just driving along on Central in Highland Park. Set back in a modern clump of stores, it's the sort of place you need to know is there. But thanks to the advice of frequent Roadfood.com contributor chicagostyledog, we knew we needed to find it.

You'll have many choices when you come to Stash's, which is not merely a hot dog and hamburger joint, but is also Guido's Pastaria, where the management will create whatever sort of dish you want from ten kinds of noodle, six different sauces, and all manner of vegetable and cheese toppings.

We cannot tell you about the pasta, nor do we have anything to say about the hamburgers, beef sandwiches, gyros, wraps, pockets, and quesadillas. We found Stash's for its hot dog – char-cooked, please, so it gets crusty. It is pocketed in a fresh Rosen's brand poppy-seed bun and topped with your choice from a selection of twelve different condiments: mustard, relish, raw onions, lettuce, pickle slices, two kinds of pickle spear, tomatoes, grilled onions, sliced Italian peppers, whole sport peppers, and celery salt. This is one beautiful wiener, and delicious. There are jumbo dogs and Polishes, too, as well as double dogs in a single bun; but it's our opinion that one normal dog, adorned with all the pretty garnishes, is a well-nigh perfect food.

With a Stash's hot dog, French fries are essential. These are four-star potatoes with a creamy center and crunchy edge. Cheddar cheese is available as a topping, but in this case, all we want is a sprinkle of salt.

Outstanding! Stash's has been a part of the community for many, many years. The Cheddar Char dogs are amazing, as are the burgers, steak sandwiches, and so much more. They have food for any or every one, but the dogs and the fries are the best. Highest quality foods, including, of course, Vienna Beef products.

After reading the review here we stopped by for lunch on our way to a Brewer's game. Since we would be indulging in the brats at Miller Park we opted for the special of the day, a sausage sandwich. It was wonderful. It was a ground sausage patty that had to be at least 1/3lb and was served on a great split top bun. The fries were as delious as reported. No way could I eat an entire sandwich and after my friend finished it for me he was beyond stuffed. We will certainly stop here again when in the area. It is a bit hard to find but worth looking for. We also liked the decor - sleek and really clean.
