Walls' Drive In

Highway 66, Cannelton, IN - (812) 547-8501

Walls’ “Big Square Burger” is indeed square, but it isn’t really huge. It is a modest-sized patty, available in the “Big Square Box” configuration, which means fully dressed with French fries and baked beans on the side. If you really do have a big appetite, you can get a double-size square burger or, better yet, a “Wall Banger Special,” which is a Big Square topped with melted cheese and a round of Canadian bacon.

Beyond hamburgers, this jolly year-around drive-in on the Indiana side of the Ohio River has an exemplary regional fast-food menu featuring crisp-fried tenderloins (those are pounded-thin rounds of pork on a bun), hot dogs, and plump Polish sausages. Good ice cream, too, either hard-packed or soft-serve.

It is a very pleasant place for a snack, day or night. There are shaded picnic tables on the broad green lawn out back; but of course many summertime regulars who come in the evening choose to dine in the parking lot, off their dashboards with windows open, so they can engage in the classic drive-in ritual of car-to-car socializing.

Don't waste your time...

I used to work across the river in Hawesville, KY and, being from The Diner State (and having experienced Fuddruckers, White Mana and Manna, White Diamond, White Castle, etc.), I have to say that Walls' is mediocre at best. The burgers are no better or worse than most (though I will say they are juicy), with the same tired toppings, and the staff when I went had the collective IQ of 3. The majority of the order was delayed by them asking such customer service questions as "Huh?" and "What?" I thought I was in "Deliverance." In fact I was surprised it was in Indiana since I still thought I was in the hickass county I worked in.

If you're nearby and hungry have fun... but drive there just for that? If that's your idea of fun and/or good food, you gotta get out more.
