The buttercream frosting on the cakes and cupcakes at Deerfield's Bakery is the best anywhere in the Chicago region, and for that reason alone is worth the trek! It is neither too fatty in taste nor overwhelmingly sugary. I am not sure what the secret ingredient is but it'll have you coming back.

At Easter time, there is a plethora of bunny and lamb cakes, and with all special order cakes, you can choose from a variety of fillings. I am partial to the fudge filling. The decorations on the cakes are excellent, and you can custom order cakes that are three dimensional (trains, dump trucks, etc.) if you want. Their butter cookies and iced butter cookies are also superb, as are the bagels and other baked goods.

There is an incredible variety at this bakery. It can be overwhelming (in a good way). The place is very clean, and there are many people on staff to help you.

As you step into Deerfield's, the heady fragrance of butter and vanilla serves as a messenger for all the good things that await you. Wonderful baked goods surround you; among them, rich butter cream and whipped cream layer cakes, pastries, petit fours, and coffee cakes. Since 1886, Deerfield's has consistently maintained high quality standards. For Roadfooders, portable delicacies can be found in the back at the large self-service display.

A specialty is the exceptional Boston crème-filled Bismarck ...a large puff of delicate dough with a crème filled center, topped with chocolate icing. The luscious crème filling is rich, smooth, with just the right texture. Be warned: eating this by hand can be difficult. The pastry has just enough pull to encourage the extra generously portioned cream filling...and it will ooze out of control once you've bitten in. A fork and knife may be necessary, especially if approached with unbridled enthusiasm.

Another treat is the apple pie tart. This personal size pie contains lots of chewy apple chunks held together by a sweet, cinnamon laced pie filling, all competently supported by a buttery, flaky piecrust and finished with a streusel topping.

There are many other types and varieties from which to choose, including some conventional doughnuts, all baked fresh, far too many to describe here. However, two must-mentions are the chocolate chip coffee cake and, if you're feeding a few or more, Deerfield's layer cakes. Well known for their irresistible butter cream frosting, these cakes can be custom ordered in advance and never disappoint.

Piping hot coffee is available to go. There are a few tables where you can sit and munch away if you can't wait to get home or in your car to dig in.

If you are anywhere near Chicago's North Shore, Deerfield's is a good spot to pick up delicious sweets that will last a long way down the road.
