Craig's

Rt. 70, DeValls Bluff, AR - (501) 998-2616

"Mild, medium, or hot?" you will be asked when you place an order at this roadside smoke house. Even the mild stuff packs a pleasant punch; medium is very spicy; hot is diabolical, enough to set your tongue aglow for hours. It was quite a sight to watch local boys in overalls come to Craig's for "extra hots" at lunch time, and quickly ingest two or three big sandwiches non-stop before hopping in their trucks and driving back to work. Not a one of the big fellers combusted from the heat.

This is superior Q; mild or hot, the lean slices of pork are irresistibly tasty even before their red-orange, peppery sauce is applied. The way most people seem to like it served at Craig's is in a bun as a sandwich, wrapped in wax paper and stuck together with a toothpick. Stuffed into the bun atop the pork is cool cole slaw, providing a truly sensational balance. And on the side, there are Ozark-style beans, silky and sweet, cosseted in a lovely amber emulsion.

Much of Craig's business is take-out, although a scattering of tables across the floor inside provides space for eating in. For dessert, drive to the other side of Route 70 and get a piece of Mary Thomas's pie. It is a sublime dénouement after one of Craig's climactic meals.

I first heard about Craig's over 25 years ago from a traveling salesman. I found myself within a few miles one cold winter day and made a detour to see for myself. Believe me, it was worth it!

I had a pulled pork sandwich and a Coke. I had to eat it in my car, as at the time there was no dining room, and it was too cold to eat outside.

Anytime I am anywhere near DeValls Bluff (and by near, I mean anywhere in central Arkansas) I make a special trip. Now I buy several sandwiches and save the others for when I get home.

Best BBQ ever!

I was about five years old when I tried my first Craig's BBQ pork sandwich. My dad is from Jacksonville, AR and was in the Army. We visited his hometown at least once a year and we always stopped on our return home to get a bag full of sandwiches. I am now 38 years old and, although I don't do as much traveling, my dad drives to Jacksonville once every three months or so from Florida, and I always ask him to bring me bottles of Craig's delicious BBQ sauce so I can make my BBQ pork sandwiches at home. To this day and for always, Craig's BBQ in DeValls Bluff, AR is my all time favorite BBQ joint in the world.

I recommend Craig's to everyone who loves BBQ and travels through or within 100 miles of the place.

This is, by far, one of the best eateries ever. I have dined here over the years. My family has made it a special point to drive through DeValls Bluff from time to time to pick up food to bring home. This is barbeque like none other.

You must have the real deal: the sandwich. It comes wrapped in wax paper, and you have to eat it with the slaw, as it is served on the sandwich. The flavors combine together to make it an amazing experience.

I have been a customer since I was born; my parents lived nearby when I was just a baby. Don't deny yourself one of life's finest dining pleasures. Also note, the staff is so incredibly grateful for their tips. I am a Dallas area resident, and tipping here does not go far. These people deserve it and appreciate it, too. I cannot tell you how nice they have been to me when I have tipped.

Oh, and as far as the pies go? I have no idea; I've never had any room. These sandwiches are the meal for me.

I remember Craig's from when I was a child, in the early 70s. It was wonderful back then and I hear it is still wonderful today.
