Lock Drugs

1003 Main St., Bastrop, TX - (512) 321-2422

Although it dates back only to the 1970s, Lock Drugs seems ancient. Its displays of old remedies, the beautiful wooden fixtures in which medicine is stored, and the slow, easy-going pace of the little drug store all hearken back to a simpler time.

While we love visiting pharmacies wherever we go, we were drawn to this one on a Roadfood mission: to drink milk shakes and ice cream sodas. At the front of the store is a marble counter and a short row of metal stools on which customers perch to enjoy their ice cream treats. No hot dishes are served (other than popcorn from a popper at the end of the counter), and there is no meal menu at all. The repertoire of Lock is strictly soda fountain fare.

There are malts, shakes, sodas, floats, and sundaes (made with Blue Bell ice cream), and one specialty we've not seen anywhere else – a frosted Coke. That's a drink made just like a milk shake but using Coca-Cola instead of milk. The result is a stunningly sweet, effervescent beverage that is a distant reminder that Coke in fact began as a pharmaceutical.
