A gentleman at the next table was regaling his family, and the waitress, with tales of how, when he was a teenager, he used to eat two hamburgers at Grover's. We wondered at the amazed reactions to his dog-bites-man confession. Eating two burgers doesn't seem so outlandish to us. Then our own burgers arrived, and we understood.
Grover's Bar & Grill serves a locally famous 12-ounce hamburger, and you'll often see tables for two splitting one. The burger is a broad almost-inch-thick patty served on a large bun and fully garnished with fresh lettuce, juicy ripe slices of tomato, and crisp white onion, pickle spear on the side. The meat is standard-issue finely ground beef, though plenty juicy, and the vegetables are in perfect condition. A basket of crisp fries is a nice idea, too, along with an afternoon pitcher for those who don't have to return to work.
Grover's is a rather small bar on a busy road, with perhaps half-a-dozen tables and booths in the drop-ceilinged dark bar proper, and another half-dozen or so in an airy and bright dining area festooned with beer company signs and mirrors, in front of the bar. They are also well-known for their Friday fish fry, and a wait for a table is not uncommon.
